Grissom has RBI double to help Red Sox beat Rays 3-1

Vaughn Grissom had an RBI double and scored a run to help Boston beat Tampa Bay 3-1 in the teams’ season finales, earning the Red Sox third place ahead of the Rays in the AL East

Three-hit night in loss Grissom went 3-for-4 with a run scored in Friday's 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

Impact Grissom, who started for the fourth time in the last five games, is 7-for-18 (.389) with a double, two RBI and two steals since being called up last week. It was a rough year for the 23-year-old, whose spring training groin/hamstring injury lingered for months. A positive finish to the season, including a productive stint at Triple-A Worcester, should put him in line to be Boston's starter at second base in 2025.

Sitting after three straight starts Grissom is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays.

Impact Grissom had started each of the last three games at second base, going 4-for-11 with a walk, a double, two stolen bases, two RBI and one run. The Red Sox could rotate a number of players at second base down the stretch, including Ceddanne Rafaela. Though Rafaela made each of his last five starts in center field, he may end up seeing more time at the keystone at Grissom's expense now that Tyler O'Neill has been cleared to play the outfield Wednesday after recently being held out of the lineup or limited to designated-hitter duties due to a back issue. Rafaela will join Grissom on the bench Wednesday, however, as Enmanuel Valdez gets the nod at second base.

Impact The 23-year-old is getting a shot at regular playing time over the final week of the season, and Grissom took advantage of the opportunity Tuesday. In four appearances since his return to the majors, including three straight starts at second base, he's gone 4-for-12 with one run, two RBI and both his steals on the year. Grissom has had a tough 2024 campaign, but he could still head into spring training next year as the favorite to start at the keystone.

Impact Grissom knocked in Boston's first run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. It was his first RBI since rejoining the Red Sox late last week. He's been in the lineup three consecutive days, including the nightcap Sunday's doubleheader, and should get plenty of opportunities at second base over the final week of the regular season. The position, which he had been expected to fill prior to injuries flaring up in spring training, has been a revolving door for Boston in 2024. Grissom is looking to build off a month of sustained success at Triple-A Worcester, for whom he batted .366/.489/.549 with 18 walks, four home runs, 18 RBI and 17 runs scored over 21 games before his elevation to the majors.
