2024 NFL MVP race, odds: Josh Allen, Saquon Barkley surge; Lamar Jackson falls

Josh Allen's odds to be named NFL MVP shortened after he and his Bills defeated the 49ers 35-10 in a snowy Sunday Night Football showdown in Buffalo.

Now the quarterback sits at -225, moving from +150 over the last several days.

"Josh Allen — he's throwing them, he's catching them, he's running them in. He's doing a little bit of everything for the Buffalo Bills," FOX Sports NFL analyst and "Breakfast Ball" co-host Mark Schlereth said after Buffalo's win over San Francisco.

But Allen's not the only player whose odds in this market have gotten shorter.

Eagles running back Saquon Barkley moved to +350 from +475 after Philadelphia handled Baltimore 24-19 in Week 13.

Just two weeks ago, Barkley was a long shot in this market at +7500. Now he's second on the board behind Allen.

In the Eagles' win over the Rams in Week 12, he set the Eagles' single-game rushing record, previously held by LeSean McCoy (217). He also became the first player in Eagles history to have 300 scrimmage yards in a game (255 rushing and 47 receiving).

Schlereth praised Saquon recently, saying, "I hate the whole ‘quarterback has to win the MVP.’ If I was an [MVP] voter — and I'm not — Saquon would get my vote."

Third on the board is Lamar Jackson, whose odds lengthened to +900 from +250 after losing to Philly.

Here are two things we know about NFL MVP: the last non-QB to win the award was Adrian Peterson in 2012, and, before that, it was LaDainian Tomlinson (2006).

To tally that up, 16 of the last 18 winners have been quarterbacks.

Last year, Lamar Jackson had 15-1 odds to win the MVP and ended up stealing it with a December surge past Brock Purdy.

Jalen Hurts

The addition of Saquon Barkley could have a massive impact on the offense, similar to how Christian McCaffrey transformed the 49ers. The schedule for Hurts is very favorable, and the Eagles could lead the league in offense. Hurts may be the best QB in the NFC by midseason, and these odds will shrink, so take them now.

Jared Goff

The media seems to really like Goff, or perhaps it’s his awesome story of redemption — kicked to the curb by the Rams, and then gets to within 3 points of a Super Bowl with the "lowly Lions".

Goff may not be a top-3 player for the Lions, but if Detroit wins 12 to 13 games, he’ll certainly be in the discussion.
